Customising your WordPress theme allows you to alter its appearance and functionality to match your website’s requirements. This guide will walk you through the process of customising your WordPress theme:
Introduction
The customisation options depend on the theme you’re using. Some themes come with many customisation options, while others might offer only a few basic settings. Generally, most themes allow you to modify elements like the site’s title, logo, colours, header, menu, widgets, and more.
Step 1: Access the Customiser
Log into your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Appearance > Customise
. This will open the WordPress Customiser, which offers a live preview of your changes as you make them.
Step 2: Site Identity
Under the Site Identity
section, you can change your site’s title, tagline, and logo. Some themes also let you set a site icon (or favicon).
Step 3: Colours & Background
In the Colours
or Colours & Background
section, you can change your site’s background colour, text colour, link colour, and more. The options here depend on your theme.
Step 4: Header Image
Some themes allow you to set a custom header image from the Header Image
section.
Step 5: Background Image
If your theme supports it, you can add a background image to your site from the Background Image
section.
Step 6: Menus
Under the Menus
section, you can create and manage your site’s navigation menus. You can add, delete, and rearrange your menu items here.
Step 7: Widgets
In the Widgets
section, you can manage the small blocks of content that appear in your theme’s sidebar(s), footer, or other widget areas.
Step 8: Homepage Settings
In the Homepage Settings
section, you can choose what to display on your site’s homepage. You can opt for your latest blog posts or set a specific page as your homepage.
Step 9: Additional CSS
If you have knowledge of CSS, you can use the Additional CSS
section to add custom styles to your theme.
Step 10: Publish Changes
Once you’re satisfied with your changes, click Publish
at the top of the customiser to make your changes live.
Remember, the options you see in the Customiser depend heavily on the theme you are using. For more advanced changes or if your theme doesn’t provide the customisation option you need, you might have to modify your theme’s files directly or use a plugin. Always backup your site before making significant changes.
